Happy Fall! As I walk through classrooms I am in awe at the quality of work our students produce! Our school’s focus this year is in writing. How great it is to see students cheer when it is time to write! It’s true! It is so exciting to see them grow. Teaching writing is so much fun as they learn the power of a good story and developing authentic writing with their own thinking. We know you will enjoy their published work.
We would like to welcome Leticia Ramirez (Leti) to Nordstrom as our new Community Liaison. Come in and introduce yourself to Leti and get to know her. She is here to help!
Emergency contacts: Please ensure your contacts are up to date. If the event that we need to contact you and you are out of the area, do you have someone that can pick your child up listed on the emergency card? Incoming phone calls may not get through in an urgent situation so please have a neighbor, carpool parent, relative, or friend that can pick your up your child on the emergency card contact list. Don’t be shy, put a few!
Student Safety: We have some safety concerns that we need to addr
ess for the safety of all students!
- Students should never cross Dunne Ave. except in the crosswalk - even with an adult.
- TK/K students need to be walked to their classroom, not dropped off in the circle.
- Double parking on Dunne is illegal.
- Patience in the parking lot is the only way we will all survive! Please be kind and courteous (your kids are watching).
- Pull all the way forward in the drop off lanes.
- Driving SLOWLY through the parking lot is for all student’s safety.
- Please remind your students to come out of school and sit as they wait for you to pick them up.
- 7:30 is the earliest a child should be dropped off.
- 2:15 is the latest a child should be picked up.
Thank you Home and School Club!!!
So many thank you’s to say:
First, Family Fun Night was SO fun and a great community event. This would not have happened without the hard work of our Home and School Club, especially the organizers Lesa Pfeffer and Sandra Chan. Their team stepped up to organize, plan, and execute a fabulous night for our community. This fundraiser helps pay for our One Yard coach and our theater and dance programs. Thank you!
PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support)
Nordstrom received the GOLD award for the effectiveness of our PBIS program. Our teachers and staff continue to notice what your children are doing right and focusing on the positive. It’s working!!
School is different than it was when we were growing up. Regular attendance is more important than ever before primarily because the lessons, activities, creations, challenges, and groups that students miss when they’re gone, are not make-upable. You can’t make up a morning meeting. You can’t make up a reading group, a minilesson, a cooperative learning structure, a group project, a literature circle, a science discussion, a reading conference. So before you ask, “I’m taking my kid to Disney for a week, are they going to miss anything?”...Yes! EVERYTHING actually. They miss out on classroom learning experiences they will never get back. The evidence of learning at school means ongoing portfolios, writing notebooks, discussions and conversations. The 21st century education emphasis is on process over product, and progress over perfect.
We understand that sometimes students must be out, and we know there are valid reasons to be absent. We appreciate your careful consideration before you choose to have your child miss school. Learning is a gift. Be present.
We're here already....October! And with that comes a host of fun fall events brought to you by your Home and School Club.
